South Brisbane Cemetery- Haunted Site

Our next ‪#‎hauntedsite‬ is the South Brisbane Cemetery.

Near the entrance to Dutton Park Cemetery, officially known as South Brisbane Cemetery, among the rows of old gravestones, stands one that tells a personal story of tragedy:

IN LOVING MEMORY OF SELINA MARY,
BELOVED DAUGHTER OF W’M & SELINA BROWN
WHO WAS ACCIDENTLY DROWNED MARCH 13TH 1890,
AGED 16 YEARS.

A sad poem conveys the grief of the young girl’s parents…

A LIGHT IS FROM OUR HOUSEHOLD GONE
THE VOICE WE LOVED IS STILL’D
A PLACE IS VACANT AT OUR HEARTH
WHICH NEVER CAN BE FILLED

William and Selina Brown operated the Plough Inn Hotel at South Brisbane, which continues to trade, and is now a historic icon at Southbank which has developed around it.

On the day she was taken from them, Selina, named after her mother, was playing at the rear of her parents establishment, swimming in floodwater. The Brisbane River had broken its banks and flooded the city. Water rose to the first floor of the hotel – all of South Brisbane was under water. Young Selina jumped in, and disappeared from view. Soon after her lifeless body was retrieved.

On our South Brisbane Cemetery Ghost Tour we visit her grave, hear the ghost stories that evolved over time about her and separate the facts from fiction. In 2011 Ghost Tours restored her grave as part of our commitment to cemetery heritage – the money coming from our guided tours of this cemetery.

We would love to have you undertake this tour, it takes place on Saturday evenings – numbers for this walking tour are strictly limited so you will need to book to secure a spot. To book or find out more information visit our website or call us on (07) 3344 7265.
